There are several different schools of thought when it comes to hypnosis and self-hypnosis.

One thing that many self-help experts agree on is that after years of research, hypnosis is one of the most effective, popular, and yet misunderstood self-improvement tools available.

Traditional hypnosis and self-hypnosis consist of the hypnotist (or hypnosis recording) guiding the client into the relaxed "Alpha" state, and then offering post-hypnotic suggestions for personal change and self-improvement.

Ericksonian Hypnotherapy, which is a more modern form, is commonly known as conversational hypnosis. Ericksonian hypnotherapy commonly relies on metaphors which hide the suggestions from the conscious mind. This technique generally eliminates the blockage or resistance to the post hypnotic suggestions that commonly occurs with today's analytical personality.

In recent years, a new technology devised in the 1970's known as Neuro-Linguistic Programming has gained notoriety. Like hypnosis, it also utilizes the "Alpha" state of mind to communicate with the unconscious mind.

But unlike the more traditional forms of hypnosis, which rely on post-hypnotic suggestions, NLP relies on training the unconscious to use the same exact thought patterns that it's currently using to create a problem, to eliminate it!
